National Monuments


Margarita Island does count with a big number of natural monuments which has a high historic value and great tourist interest in the region.
One has to visit the two little twins Colinas 103 meters high, which appears to be the breast of a beautiful women, its name is “Las Tetas de Maria Guevara”. The story tells that Maria Guevara was a beautiful native of the island very attractive and popular with the fish men of the zone. It also has an extensive green flora with different formations of mangles and little lakes that are form for the entering of ocean water to the coast. After walk approximately 11 kilometer around the monument one gets to an embarcadero call “Cano Indio” where one can rent fishing boats to go around “La Laguna de la Restinga”.

One can find “La Laguna de las Marites” around 12 kilometer inside of Porlamar, this lake is also known is past times to be the lake of “Maria Salazar” and it was proclaimed to be a natural monument in 1974. It is a beautiful salt water lake and not too deep. It has 3.674 hectares, with full mangles that form false islands that are separated for canals and wide aquatic venues. The population of this area is different species of birds and fish. It exist a communication with this lake and the open ocean through a canal that ends in No Vicorio on the east and El Yaque on the west, leaving a sanding forming called the Yaque Island.
