Margarita Island
Margarita Island is located in the South America Coast, next to Coche and Cubagua islands. Margarita Island forms the Nueva Esparta State in Venezuela. The territorial extension of the island is around 934 kilometer square. It has a population of 300.000 people. The people living in this island are called “Margaritenos” and they are a young and happy town always wanting to show tourists the beauty and culture of this island.
Margarita island is an ideal place to rest, because everything is created in a way where one’s vacation will be enjoyable and animated, this island offers an indescribable beauty, here one can enjoy and share the peace of the spirit of good and working people, also the charming natural environment, 168 kilometers of spectacular beaches, interesting folklore, tropical climate, and a 5 an 6 stars hotel industry.
Its name Margarita Island it actually means Pearl Island baptized like this by Cristobal Colon, because of the amount of actual pearls on its coast. Today it is actually the biggest production of pearls in the country making beautiful jewelry.

One can find from the most tranquil beaches to the ones with high waves allowing sports like surfing and any diversity of aquatics sports.
The aquatic sports that are usually practice in this island are:
Windsurf: Usually practice in the beach “El Yanque” that is recognized to be one of the best 5 places on the world to practice it. The speed of the wind and its direction and constancy makes it possible, also the warm and non-deep waters helps the sport.
Snorkeling or Scuba diving: In the Margarita Island waters there are extraordinary beauty and typical marine life making this sport a one a life time experience.
Skydiving: During the weekends is very common to watch people jump out of airplanes into the water.Surfing: the beach “El Parguito” is an ideal place for the practice of this sport because of the rock bottom the formation of waves is consistent and strong

National Monuments

Margarita Island does count with a big number of natural monuments which has a high historic value and great tourist interest in the region.
One has to visit the two little twins Colinas 103 meters high, which appears to be the breast of a beautiful women, its name is “Las Tetas de Maria Guevara”. The story tells that Maria Guevara was a beautiful native of the island very attractive and popular with the fish men of the zone. It also has an extensive green flora with different formations of mangles and little lakes that are form for the entering of ocean water to the coast. After walk approximately 11 kilometer around the monument one gets to an embarcadero call “Cano Indio” where one can rent fishing boats to go around “La Laguna de la Restinga”.
One can find “La Laguna de las Marites” around 12 kilometer inside of Porlamar, this lake is also known is past times to be the lake of “Maria Salazar” and it was proclaimed to be a natural monument in 1974. It is a beautiful salt water lake and not too deep. It has 3.674 hectares, with full mangles that form false islands that are separated for canals and wide aquatic venues. The population of this area is different species of birds and fish. It exist a communication with this lake and the open ocean through a canal that ends in No Vicorio on the east and El Yaque on the west, leaving a sanding forming called the Yaque Island.

The natal house of “El General Juan Bautista Arismendi”
Arismendi was a general born on March 15th, 1775. He was the most prestigious fighter of the independence war of margarita. The house is located in the Arismendi district, the county of Luisa Caceres de Arismendi . This house was demolish during the Venezuelan independence war and re-built in 1970. Inside of the house there still frame pictures of his family, the national escudo, and old pieces used on war, the patio offers a sculpture of him and his wife. The access to the house is by land and is open every day from 8am to 5pm.

Hand Made Art (Artesania)
The hand make art work is one of the most defunded costumes of the island every little town has a special dedication to the artesian work, they are all very particular. One can find hamacs and the typical “chinchorros margaritenos”, “mapires” (handmade baskets). El Cercado is the center of the most important elaboration of ceramics in the island, and on the Marco typical shoes are fixed.
The National Tree is called Guyacan Guaicum Officinale.
The island has its own National Himno: which lyrics were wrote by M.A Mata Sylva and the music was put together by B. Rodriguez Bruzual.

The economy of the Nueva Esparta State is fundamental on tourism, commerce and industry. These are sectors that at the same time help the growth of other sides of the islands like the constructions and transport. Agriculture on the island is almost non-existent the same goes for the exploitation of minerals.
There has been an expansion of the local demand so lately its been reactivated the fishing and agricultural venues, giving more opportunities of employment and production growth.
The tourist activity in the Nueva Esparta state gives a significant amount of economic venue to the Country. Tourism and open port generates a substantial income for the nation.

Folklore
The big celebrations of Margarita takes place between the 8th and 15th of the month of September because of the giving grace for the Virgin of Del Valle, “La Patrona” of the island.To this annual celebration that takes place on the “El Valle del Espiritu Santo”
town people from all over the country goes to pay for promises that were made to the saint. This is a popular, happy and loud party, where the dancing, the music, and the food take place. AT the same time there is a high consume of beer and ethylic alcohol during this celebrations.Typical Food

The island because it’s a place where the sea products are found has a delicious kitchen that is base on fresh and salty fish. The typical plate it is called “El Sancocho de pescado”. It is a soup with different kinds of fish and national spices.
The kind of fish found on this dish is “El Mero”, “El Pargo”, “El Carite”, “El corocoro” y “El jurel” which are usually consumed fried.
“El Cazon” is a small shark that is ground and usually eaten on empanadas. The food is also always eaten with arepa o casaba.
The typical drinks of the island are the ponsigue and a variety of natural fruit juices like pineapple, and tamarindo.
